CLIMATE BONDS' GSS+ BONDS TRAINING

Explore the dynamic world of financial instruments addressing global challenges with Climate Bonds' GSS+ Bonds Training 2024. Delve into the significance of thematic labelled bonds as catalysts for tackling the climate crisis, environmental degradation, inequality and other social and environmental challenges faced worldwide. This comprehensive course by Climate Bonds Initiative offers a deep understanding of green, social, sustainability, transition, and other use-of-proceeds (GSS+) bonds, the market history and infrastructure, its main actors, processes, and the latest statistical information collected and analysed by Climate Bonds' team. It is a 7.5-hour learning experience with learning modules, case studies, interactive discussions, and exercises, providing a robust overview of GSS+ instruments. Join us in the movement towards a greener, fairer, and more sustainable world.

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR

Climate Bonds’ ‘GSS+ Bonds’ training programme is intended for professionals with a certain awareness of the sustainable finance agenda and at least a basic grounding of fixed income markets. Due to the comprehensive and introductory nature of the topics covered, it is well suited to serve individuals who aim at broadening their knowledge on the labelled bonds space and sustainable finance worldwide including, but not limited to, investors, asset managers, research analysts, bond issuers & structurers, sustainability teams, public sector officials, consultancies, external review service providers, legal teams, think tanks, academia, and many more.

The course has no specific pre-requirements.

 

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The GSS+ Bonds Training objective is to provide an overall understanding of the role of thematic labelled bonds in shifting financial practices to more sustainable approaches while providing an overview of how these bonds impact the way the market perceives sustainability and what attracts investors and issuers to the GSS+ bonds market. Additionally, this training aims at discussing in detail the use-of-proceeds labelled bond issuance process and providing comprehensive information on the GSS+ bonds market’s size, key stakeholders, key investment themes, among other key elements. 

Participants in the training program can expect to acquire solid knowledge and be able to respond to the following questions at the end of the sessions: 

  • What is the current climate situation and status of climate finance flows? 

  • What are thematic labelled bonds, their differences and similarities? 

  • How has the labelled bond market evolved in the past years? 

  • What are the common forms and benefits of thematic labelled bonds? 

  • Who are the actors involved in the GSS+ issuance process, their roles, and responsibilities? 

  • What is the market infrastructure supporting the issuance of GSS+ bonds (principles, standards, taxonomies, etc.)?   

  • What are the requirements for use-of-proceeds labelled bond issuances (from inception to maturity)?  

  • What are the contents and characteristics of a use-of-proceeds labelled bond framework? 

  • What are the external review methodologies currently available in the market? 

  • What is the process for Climate Bonds certification? 

  • How did the GSS+ bond market start? 

  • What has been the evolution of the GSS+ bond market? 

  • What are sovereign and sub-sovereign GSS+ bonds? 

 

TRAINING METHODOLOGY AND APPROACH

  • Training format: 7.5 hours of content delivered online (Live Virtual via Zoom) in 3 sessions of 2.5 hours each (1 session per day)
  • Trainers: climate finance specialists will deliver the training
  • Participants: 30 is the suggested number of participants per training
  • Material: Climate Bonds Initiative provides participants with all training materials and presentations
  • Language: training materials and communication are in English
  • Certificate: participants who complete the course are awarded a Climate Bonds Certificate

 

OUR TRAINERS

Matthew Diepenbroek

Matthew Diepenbroek is a Capacity Building Specialist at Climate Bonds Initiative. With a focus on capacity-building in the dynamic field of sustainable finance, Matt is jointly responsible for the preparation, delivery and moderation of Climate Bonds’ global training programme. His expertise lies in fostering a clear understanding of the critical role individuals and organisations play in directing capital towards a sustainable agenda. His background in various financial roles prior to joining Climate Bonds includes spearheading capital mobilisation efforts, conducting intricate valuations of private enterprises and compiling comprehensive economic market assessments. This experience has honed his ability to engage with stakeholders at all organisational levels across diverse global landscapes and has afforded him a nuanced perspective on the varied challenges and opportunities in the broader financial sector, which is now brought into the world of sustainable finance.  Matthew holds a Bachelors in Business Sciences with honours in Econometrics from the University of Cape Town and is a CFA level III candidate.

 

Meggie Eloy

Meggie has assisted in delivering over USD 270bn Use of Proceeds debt instruments that are consistent with the goal of limiting global warming to at or below 1.5°C future. Working across a variety of sectors, from Renewable Energy, Low Carbon Buildings, Low Carbon Transport and, more recently, the transition of the hard-to-abate sectors such as Steel, Cement, Hydrogen and Basic Chemicals. As Senior Analyst on the Capacity Building and Technical Assistance Team, Meggie provides technical assistance to prospective green debt issuers through conducting portfolio reviews, entity readiness assessments, training and capacity building. Meggie holds a Bachelors degree in Geography from the University of Leicester and a MSc in Corporate Environmental Management from the University of Sussex.
