This paper provides a roadmap for China to scale up the issuance of green bonds in the domestic market and develop the overseas RmB denominated-market by identifying and addressing the current challenges that limit green bond issuance.

This is the second in a series of four 2016 discussion papers issued by the climate Bonds initiative and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) on prospects for the Chinese green bond market. This 2016 series of discussion papers follow the March 2014 How to Grow Green Bonds in China report and the Growing a green bonds market in China: Key recommendations for policymakers in the context of China’s changing financial landscape report of March 2015.
