Bank of China announces first green covered bond

Foreshadowed by Climate Bonds on September 14th, the BoC has formally announced issuance of its world’s first dual recourse green bonds in a media release here. The 3 year USD denominated bonds will be listed in London.

We are pleased to read the announcement specifically notes that the cover pool bonds are selected from constituents of the China Bond China Climate-Aligned Bond Index (recently launched in Beijing, by a partnership of CECEP Consulting, CDCC and Climate Bonds) and are in line with the PBoC Catalogue and the Climate Bonds Taxonomy.

There’s an earlier story here that gives a little more background.

The significance of this ‘covered bond’ issuance from the BoC should not be underestimated. We'll have some more to say in our next Market Blog.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as we can translate the full announcement and other details emerge.

Our Standards have a Chinese version – Launched at Green Bond Seminar

Sean Kidney and Mr. Zhang Rui, Managing Director of SynTao Green Finance on the Green Bond Seminar in Beijing

Climate Bonds, SynTao Green Finance and Shenzhen Emission Exchange jointly organized a series of seminars on Green Bonds to promote China’s green market awareness.

Our CEO Sean Kidney was present to launch the Chinese version of the Climate Bonds Standard (v 2.0) before audiences from mainland China and Hong Kong.

The Chinese language version of the Standards adds another tool to assist the certification of Chinese green bonds and further enhance international market recognition.

We expect to see more Chinese certifications in the months ahead, when they come we’ll let you know.

FYI: A newer version of our Standards (v 2.1) is in the works, and might be out before the end of the year… watch this space!

Climate Bonds & CECEP host Assurance Roundtable in Beijing

2016 China Coal Consumption Cap and Energy Transition International Workshop – developing China’s leadership in global green governance

Chinese and foreign government ministries, research institutions, industry associations and NGOs were present at this Beijing event on November 1-2, held to discuss and develop policy recommendations for China’s energy transition.

Sean Kidney delivered a keynote address, outlining how green bonds can support the transition to renewable energy at a plenary session on day one, moderated by Bai Rongchun, Former Counsellor of the NDRC National Energy Administration and China Coal Cap Project Research Steering Committee Member.

“Professor Kidney!” Guest lecturer at Tsinghua University Beijing

Sean Kidney was invited to address MBA students at a ‘Green Bond Forum’ at the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, China’s most prestigious university, during his last visit.

Tsinghua counts amongst its alumni an honour role of prominent Chinese politicians, scientists and artists. Here at Climate Bonds we appreciate the opportunity to discuss green finance with the next generation of China’s leaders.

We tracked down a few images of 'Professor Kidney' at work. He enjoyed the occasion, we hope you enjoy the pics.

Until next time
