Mobilising private finance for climate is a policy priority for the European Commission.

In April, the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Climate published a report on the topic, co-authored by the Climate Bonds Initiative, 2° Investing Initiative CDC Climat, the Frankfurt School UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance, Triple E Consulting and others.

The report, Financing the Future, provides EU policymakers with an actionable toolbox for mobilising private finance for climate-friendly investments, focusing on tapping into the capital pools of institutional investors. It highlights how actions to increase climate-friendly investments can be integrated with the current financial policy agenda in the EU, especially the Investment Plan for Europe and the Capital Markets Union.

In the short-term, public entities can play a role in boosting the volume of green bonds; improving the risk-return profile of green bonds; supporting green securitisation and improving accounting and disclosure of financial products.

The workshop will dive into detail of these key findings of this report, with a particular focus on how the Capital Markets Union provides an exciting opportunity for EU policymakers to advance the green bond market.
