Certification of bonds, loans and other debt instruments
The Use of Proceeds Certification verifies that the proceeds of financial instruments are allocated to specific projects, assets, activities, or expenditures that align with the Climate Bonds Sector-Specific Criteria. Certification serves as an endorsement of the instrument’s green credentials, promoting transparency and investor confidence.
What can be certified?
Financial instruments whose proceeds are allocated to eligible green projects or expenditures in line with the Climate Bonds Sector Criteria.
Who can apply?
- The issuer of a bond.
- The borrower of a loan.
Certification process
Issuers must comply with specific requirements outlined by the Climate Bonds Standard and relevant Sector Criteria during both:
- Pre-Issuance: Before the instrument is issued.
- Post-Issuance: After issuance, to ensure continued alignment.
Additional options:
- Retroactive Certification: Available at any time while the debt instrument is outstanding.
- Programmatic Certification: Designed for frequent issuers of certified debt instruments.
Certification label and validity
The Certification label is attached to the debt instrument, signifying its green credentials. Certification remains valid for the term of the debt instrument, provided the issuer maintains ongoing compliance.
Application requirements
To apply for certification, submit the following documents to certification@climatebonds.net:
- Information Form
- Signed Certification Agreement
- Verification Report, including the relevant checklist
- Green Finance Framework
