Guiding sustainable investments in solar energy
Solar energy is essential for building a low-carbon economy. The International Energy Agency predicts that solar power could supply 22% of global electricity by 2050.
By 2100, solar energy could meet up to 67% of global energy needs in a world aiming to limit temperature rise to 2°C.
The need for investment
Achieving this transition requires significant funding. Near-term estimates projected annual investments of USD65bn through 2020, and solar energy continues to play a crucial role in reducing emissions and supporting sustainable development.
Guiding investments with the Solar Energy Criteria
The Solar Energy Criteria set the standards for solar energy assets to achieve Climate Bonds Certification. These Criteria ensure that investments align with projects that promote a cleaner, greener future.
Eligible Solar Energy assets
The following solar energy projects and infrastructure qualify for Certification:
- Onshore solar electricity generation facilities.
- Onshore solar thermal facilities.
- Transmission infrastructure dedicated entirely to solar generation or thermal facilities.
Note: Facilities with fossil fuel backup must liMarine Renewablemit its use to less than 15% to qualify. Offshore solar projects are covered under the Marine Renewable Energy Criteria.
By providing clear guidelines, the Solar Energy Criteria empower investors to support projects that accelerate the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon energy system.
