Agri-Food Deforestation and Conversion Free (DCF) Sourcing

Guiding agrifood companies toward climate goals

Deforestation and the conversion of natural ecosystems are among the leading drivers of climate emissions and biodiversity loss, largely fueled by agrifood supply chains. To build a climate-resilient future and halt biodiversity decline, food supply chains must become deforestation-and conversion-free.

Why Deforestation and Conversion Free (DCF) Sourcing is crucial

  • Agrifood supply chains are responsible for 90% of recent deforestation, particularly in tropical regions.
  • Habitats are being destroyed to meet demand for commodities like beef, soy, palm oil, cocoa, and coffee.

Addressing climate change and protecting ecosystems requires agrifood companies to adopt practices that eliminate deforestation and habitat conversion from their supply chains.

What the DCF Sourcing Criteria offer

The DCF Sourcing Criteria provide procurement guidelines to help align commodity sourcing strategies with a 1.5°C transition for the land sector. Certification under these Criteria allows agrifood companies, such as food traders, distributors, and retailers to prove their supply chains are “Deforestation and Natural Ecosystem Conversion-Free.”

Key features of the criteria

  • Deforestation Cut-Off Dates: Timelines to prevent deforestation-linked products from entering global supply chains.
  • Traceability and Disclosure: Robust transparency requirements aligned with policies like the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR).
  • Market Alignment: Compliance with frameworks such as the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFi) and alignment with regulations in the EU, UK, USA, China, and Brazil.
  • Social Safeguards: Provisions to uphold human rights and protect indigenous peoples’ rights.
