Introduction
The Climate Bonds Initiative (Climate Bonds) and the Good Food Institute, together with GFI Europe, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2026 to accelerate sustainable finance for alternative proteins, with a central focus on methane abatement from livestock production. Conventional meat production is responsible for approximately 60% of agrifood system emissions and close to 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while providing only 17% of global calories. Methane from enteric fermentation and manure management in livestock systems is one of the largest and most actionable contributors to near-term warming. Scaling alternative proteins, plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-enabled, represents one of the most impactful pathways to abate methane emissions and reduce the climate footprint of food systems.
In April 2025, Climate Bonds launched its Alternative Proteins Criteria, the first dedicated framework for certifying investments in sustainable protein solutions aligned with the 1.5°C goal. This event marks the public launch of the Climate Bonds–GFI collaboration and convenes key stakeholders to translate the framework into investable action, with methane abatement as the unifying climate rationale.
Objectives
- Publicly launch the Climate Bonds–GFI partnership and signal market intent.
- Build shared understanding of what credible climate finance looks like for alternative proteins.
- Identify barriers and enablers to scaling green bond issuance in the sector.
- Connect alternative protein companies with investors, offtakers, and financiers and financial institutions.
Agenda
08:30 - 09:00 - Arrival & Coffee
09:00 - 09:15 - Welcome & partnership announcement
09:15 - 10:00 - Panel 1: Mobilising credible climate finance for methane abatement through alternative proteins
Methane from livestock production is one of the largest and most actionable drivers of near-term warming. How can standards, certification, and market integrity channel capital into alternative proteins as a key methane abatement strategy?
10:00 - 10:15 - Coffee break and networking
10:15 - 11:00 - Roundtable Discussions (3 parallel tables)
Table A: What investors need to see – metrics, governance, offtake contracts, and measurable methane reduction targets.
Table B: What alt protein companies need from finance: ticket sizes, terms, de-risking
Table C: Scaling methane solutions — how standards can accelerate market uptake
11:00 - 11:30 - Roundtable report back & synthesis
Each table rapporteur presents 2–3 key takeaways. Facilitated plenary discussion to identify shared priorities and next steps for methane-aligned investment.
11:30 - 12:30 - Panel 2: From framework to flow – case studies in green & sustainability-linked issuance
Real-world examples of GSS+ issuance in agrifood and adjacent sectors, with emphasis on methane reduction outcomes. What can alt proteins learn?
12:30 - 12:35 - Key take aways and next steps
12:35 - 13:30 - Lunch & Networking
