About the Climate Bonds Initiative

Climate Bonds Initiative is  fast growing, dynamic and driven by a big mission.  An investor-focused NGO, we work to mobilise the $100 trillion global bond market for climate change solutions. We are at the forefront of advances in green finance, working with global stakeholders: governments, investors, banks and large companies.

We lead the market with the only certification scheme for green bonds globally, provide up the minute green bond data and market analysis, advise on green capital market development, and advocate for ambitious change in the financial industry.

The Team

The Climate Bonds Standards Team works with external experts to deliver robust and credible science-based criteria and metrics for assessing green and transition investments across the economy.  It also supports the development of green and sustainability taxonomies globally from the EU to China to Latin America.

These criteria are the backbone to the Climate Bonds Standard and Certification Scheme – where we have just hit the major milestone of certifying $100bn of green bonds to date. They also guide the assessment methodology we use to assess bonds eligibility for green bond indices globally, and our advisory services to governments and policy makers on the changes needed to achieve the Paris Agreement.

We are looking to build upon our success in green bonds and expand our work to developing criteria for i) the assessment of a broader variety of financial instruments, and companies and their investment plans, and ii) a fuller range of sustainability investments incorporating the range of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  We have an exciting industrial transition programme scoped out and funded and are looking for an exceptional candidate to lead the team responsible for setting the criteria for industrial transitions that align with Paris goals for net zero by 2050 and climate adaptation and resilience.

This role

The Industrial Sustainability Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of sustainability criteria for industrial companies and investments in their operations. This will cover industries such as steel, cement, chemicals and key enabling activities such as hydrogen and CCS. Primarily, criteria will address climate impacts, setting decarbonization pathways to net-zero alignment and addressing climate resilience, and broaden out to additional green and social issues over time.

This is a fantastic opportunity to affect real change and facilitate the financial flows that are essential to enabling all sectors of the economy to transition to a low carbon, resilient and sustainable future.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a programme schedule to ensure delivery of criteria and supporting papers to time, budget and quality parameters and approved by the Standards Board.
  • Manage and support the internal team of sustainability analysts (currently 3) and external partners and expert advisors responsible for setting the criteria – including chairing technical and industry working groups.
  • Participate in external events and initiatives to advocate, educate and build collaborations, including to position CBI at the forefront of  the emerging transition finance discussion and keep pace with ongoing developments in taxonomies, regulations and market and investor trends as they relate to industrial sustainability
  • Deliver cross-team training and collaborate within CBI to support certifications in industrial sectors

Maintain the budget, monitoring expenditure and costs as programme progresses and support the development of funding proposals for additional resources.

  • Bachelor’s degree of 2:1 or higher in a related subject
  • Extensive experience in a similar role
  • Passionate in addressing climate change and able to express this commitment effectively to all partners and stakeholders
  • Experience working in decarbonization programmes as they relate to industry and up to speed with key enabling technologies such as green hydrogen
  • Ability to operate in the white space, to think creatively
  • Proven ability to manage, coordinate and prioritise across simultaneous projects and ambitious timeframes

  • A hands-on, motivated individual with drive and initiative
  • Excellent English writing and oral skills - proficient in distilling detailed technical information into easily digestible material for a variety of stakeholders
  • Based in an EU aligned timezone

Desirable:

  • Masters in related subject
  • Knowledge of sustainable finance markets
  • Familiarity with net zero scenarios, transition pathways
  • Experience in a standards-setting organisation or role
