Climate Resilient Investment on Agenda at GreenInvest World Bank Annual Meeting in Peru

Climate Bonds Initiative Helping Organise International Investor Dialogue on Green Opportunities in Emerging Markets

Limiting global warming to 2° Celsius will require trillions of dollars of annual investment in green growth. Two thirds of the investments required will be in emerging markets that need to build new climate-resilient and low carbon infrastructure.

In conjunction with the October 9-10 2015 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Lima, Peru, GreenInvest is hosting a high-level event aimed at institutional and other private sector investors who are interested to further explore green investment opportunities in emerging markets.

Supporting organisations include:

  • The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
  • European Commission
  • Climate Bonds Initiative
  • Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)
  • Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)
  • Institutional Investor Group on Climate Change (IIGCC)
  • Climate Policy Initiative
  • United Nations Environment Programme Inquiry (UNEP Inquiry).

The international dialogue will include presentations from senior level speakers; a profile of green investment opportunities as identified by the European Investment Bank (EIB), and a focused workshop to identify recommendations and actions to remove barriers to inclusive green growth.

Speakers are scheduled to include:

  • Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Co-operation and Development
  • Thomas Silberhorn, BMZ
  • Luis Alberto Moreno, President, IDB
  • Yvo De Boer, Director General, GGGI
  • Sean Kidney, CEO, Climate Bonds Initiative
  • Nick Robins, UNEP Inquiry
  • Chris Knowles, EIB

The dialogue is action-orientated, based on connecting investors with public sector institutions, including governments and development banks, around green investment opportunities in emerging markets.

Institutional investors will explore with development banks and governments what risk bridging mechanisms are required from the public sector to assist investors to increase their allocation of capital into pipelines of green investments. Direct investment, green bonds and other capital raising instruments will be part of the discussions.

The output from the Risk and Barrier Mapping workshops will contribute a report being developed by GreenInvest that will be presented at the Paris COP.

Climate Bonds Initiative will keep you posted on outcomes.
