Beijing launch: Chinese language version of Climate Bonds State of the Market 2015 report

Climate Bonds chief launching bond market report at China SIF conference

Edited text conference address:

“China has achieved an extraordinary amount over the past 30 years. Above all it has lifted more than a billion people out of poverty, one of the great human rights achievements of modern history.”

“But this has come at an enormous cost to the environment: to the country’s air, water, food and soil. For example, farmland the size of Belgium is now too polluted by toxic waste to be used.”

“China is also one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, with vast swathes of agricultural land only slightly above sea level, a water supply crisis and life-threatening heat spikes becoming more frequent.”

“Most senior policy-makers in Beijing are acutely aware of the challenge they face. They know they have to deliver much higher quality of life for their citizens as well as ensuring quality of life for the coming generations – which means addressing climate change.”

“The recent push for green finance, which we’ve reported on many occasions is part of that new priority. Growing a Chinese green bonds market is a core feature of green finance.”

Our 2015 report is the most comprehensive and up to date review of progress on climate and green bonds outcomes that is internationally available. Making that information more accessible in China is a natural step for us

Today in Beijing, as air quality again spiked into the hazardous zone, we launch the Chinese version of our Bonds and Climate Change: the State of the Market in 2015 report, commissioned by the HSBC Climate Change Centre of Excellence.

“Climate Bonds Initiative has long recognised the role that green bonds can play in China. Producing a Chinese language version of our key 2015 report reflects our commitment to help develop a sustainable green bond market as part of China’s.

The aim of the report is to educate potential green bond issuers and investors about what’s happening globally, how they could take advantage of the market, and how a green bond market could be developed.

I extend my thanks to China SIF for the opportunity to address you today at this 3rd Annual Conference”
